I suppose this is will get better in the future. Coming from Google it will work in the end. I checked the video and I have to say the idea is great. Not for the isolated kind of guy but perfect to share, to plan, to post mutual stuff like photos, to work and chat in real time. I would say it still needs some final touch, people. By the way, John, I noticed that your wonderful site looks a lot like my modest one. It must be the thesis template. I think I'll come here often for inspiration and learning. As you point out, we have to start thinking of long-term system improvements to address the workforce issue.

And beyond the system needs, we're seeing that the opportunity to point one's medical education in a direction seems to be very satisfying for the students. There's been a tremendous response from medical students in the Wisconsin Academy of Rural Medicine (WARM), here at the University of Wisconsin's School of Medicine and Public Health. It's a passionate bunch of future rural docs.

Along with increasing the supply of physicians, we must also look at alternate service-delivery models - telemedicine, non-physician primary care providers and even utilizing advanced EMS providers for house calls. There's just no getting around these data trends - we must adjust our models to emerging realities.

Thanks for the comment!

Re: Rural Medicine – serving more, with less, over huge distances

This situation is exactly the reason we need more options for students like Des Moines University's Rural Iowa Provider Education (RIPE) program. DMU has made an on-going commitment to annually provide the equivalent of six full tuition scholarships to students enrolled in the Rural Medicine Educational Pathway, encouraging them to be part of the solution to rural physician shortage in primary care and other specialties.

These kinds of programs help students work through the tuition debt load from medical school and make a difference in rural communities in need.

Re: Rural Health Discovers Social Media

Thanks, Greg - glad you found it useful! The presentation went over well, although we could have used another hour to help bridge the gap between the neophytes and advanced users.

Great presentation. I am doing similar talks later this year to EMS organizations. Many of the concepts you have outlined in this presentation would apply to ambulance agencies.

Was your presentation well received?
Glad to have just found your site. I don't think I will be able to attend the WI Rural Health Summit but it sounds like a great event. I share your interest in using social medial for rural health - especially EMS. I look forward to following your blog and twitter stream.

I think the EMR/PHR realm is just starting to be looked at, and with a little time I think there will be an explosion of options for our information. Now if they can really nail down standards by 2010, we'll be ready to rock and roll on that! Thanks for contributing!

Re: Cloud-Based EHRs + PHRs

I agree John. I have always thought that eventually a Google or Microsoft system that links my records will be the solution.
